Deep Tissue Massage focuses on realigning the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is designed to reach the deeper sections of thick muscles, targeting the individual muscle fibres.

The purpose of deep tissue massage is to ‘unstick’ the fibres on the muscles, deactivate trigger points

and release toxins.

Deep tissue massage is both corrective and therapeutic. It works by physically breaking down adhesions or trigger points in the muscles to relieve pain and restore normal movement.

Dry needling is an effective and efficient technique for the treatment of muscular pain and myofascial dysfunction.  Myofascial dry needling is an invasive procedure in which a thin filament needle is inserted into soft tissue(muscle trigger points, fascia, tendons and ligaments, etc) resulting in pain relief and and restoration of healthy physiology.

A healthy muscle feels little or no discomfort when the needling is inserted but when the muscle has active trigger points or is shortened there is often a twitch response which feels similar to a muscle cramps.

Here at Mornington Muscular Therapies we use Myotech Dry Needles, which have been  specifically for dry needling , enabling a deeper penetration and are smoother to insert resulting in less pain

Rocktape’s unique elasticity causes the skin to form convolutions and wrinkle.  This decompresses the tissue immediately below the skin.

It is believed that this has three main effects:

  • Fluid effect- improving blood and lymphatic flow in the taped area

  • Mechanical effect- improving the slide and glide between tissue layers

  • Neurological effect- altering the perception of pain and improving body awareness.

The inside of the body is covered with soft tissue called fascia. This tissue covers organs, muscles, nerves and blood vessels.

The fascia that covers your muscles is call myofascia.

When the myofascia is pushed to its limit due to trauma or overuse it can tear and then adhere back together.

These adhesions are called trigger points and can prevent the muscles from working properly.

Trigger points lead to an increase in muscle stiffness and tenderness and a decrease in range-of-motion.

Trigger points are known to radiate pain from the adhesion to other areas of the body. This is called referral pain

The exercises in the mat Pilates class focus on strengthening the muscles of the hips, back, abdominals, and glutes.

These are known in Pilates as the powerhouse muscles.

These exercises look simple but require the right kind of activation to stabilise the torso and concentration to keep these muscles activated throughout the exercises.
